Antennas are probably the most important component in your FPV system. Even if you are new to FPV flying, you have probably learnt or heard about replacing the 'rubber duck' type antennas which come as standard with most FPV gear, to better circular polarised omnidirectional antennas, like a cloverleaf. Cloverleaf antennas are certainly a good option and work very well for most applications, but there are plenty of other types of antennas and some are better suited for certain things. For example, if you are looking to increase your range, you should consider a high gain directional antenna such as a helical antenna.

Unlike a cloverleaf antenna, which has an omnidirectional reception pattern, a helical antenna is known as a directional antenna because it focuses its reception pattern in a specific direction. By taking reception away from some areas, and focusing it in a narrower beam, a helical antenna can increase your range, allowing you to fly further without using a more powerful VTX. 

This high quality Aomway 7 turn helical antenna has been specially designed and tuned for long range FPV and multipath rejection. It has a 11dbi gain which makes long distance flights possible, even using a UK-legal 25mW transmitter. As with all high gain antennas, the trade off to the increased range is a reduction in coverage; as gain increases, beam width decreases. For this reason, you need to ensure the helical antenna is always pointing at your drone, one solution is a tracking system. Another is to use a diversity receiver, which will let you use a regular cloverleaf antenna for good local coverage and a second high gain antenna, such as a patch, to give you extra range in a specific direction.

The antenna itself features an SMA connection, but it comes with a flexible coaxial adapter which is available as RP-SMA or SMA (select as required).
